Brock Turner Uses Alcohol in Rape Defense, and it Worked
In case you have been living off the grid, Brock Turner, a Stanford student, was convicted of three counts of sexual assault and sentenced to 6 months in County jail, plus 3 years probation. Here is a recap: a 23 year old woman attended a fraternity party at Stanford. Later that night, 2 graduate students were walking through the campus when they saw a man on top of a woman who was passed out. When they tried to stop him, he ran, they chased him down and held him until police arrived to arrest him. Brock Turner was initially charged with rape, which was then decreased to three felony charges of sexual assault and his defense is that he was drunk. So lets call the bullshit right there, you don’t get to claim you didn’t know it was wrong because of alcohol, but yet you are capable of processing the fact that you need to run from those trying to stop the rape. You knew what you were doing was wrong, drunk or not, and you ran. The innocent don’t run.
So why would the judge only sentence him to 6 months of jail time? He never denied his actions, he raped her and blamed it on alcohol. She was unconscious, it was witnessed and he was arrested at the scene. This is a clear-cut, no defense rape. As if this isn’t bad enough, his father, a real peach, writes a letter to the judge stating “[His sentence] is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.” So now we see why Brock has no remorse, his father is anything but a role model to his son. 20 minutes of action?! I have no words for this level of ignorance.
This entire case is sickening, from the rapist, to the father of the rapist, to the judge and the lawyer who defended him. The victim was asked on the stand what she was wearing that night. I don’t care if she was running the grounds butt naked, this isn’t a green light on rape. You want to talk about her clothes, lets talk about her being unconscious.
Another letter was released to the press where a childhood friend of the rapist defends his actions, mind you this is a female. “I don’t think it’s fair to base the fate of the next 10+ years of his life on the decision of a girl who doesn’t remember anything but the amount she drank to press charges against him. I am not blaming her directly for this, because that isn’t right. But where do we draw the line and stop worrying about being politically correct every second of the day and see that rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists.” “Rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists.” Um, that is actually exactly what it means, rapes are performed by rapists, irregardless if the victim remembers or was UNCONSCIOUS!
Many people have called for this judge, a Stanford alumni, to be removed from his position. I agree, but I think blaming just the judge is being blind to a much bigger problem. Rape is rape, no amount of alcohol or being a swimmer or calling it “20 minutes of action” changes the fact that Brock Turner raped her. Too may people are defending his actions and acting as though this is no big deal. Our rape culture needs to change, stop blaming the victim and accept that these rapists are just that, Rapists.
