After 40 weeks, 5 days, and 24 hours of labor, Grayson Jaoudeh dramatically entered our lives on 5/8/2017 at 5:21 pm. In my eyes, he is absolutely perfect and I can’t believe that he is already one week old today!
Once I hit 38 weeks, I was very ready to be done with pregnancy. But the reality of bringing home baby is very overwhelming. The first week of motherhood has been the steepest learning curve of my life. His life is in my hands every second of the day and there is no book or website that can prepare you for everything. As Marwan and I have progressed through the week, we have learned so much and yet everyday, there is still so much we don’t know. However, there are some constants we can count on!
- If you remove the diaper, the child will pee! We knew this beforehand, but coming up with solutions to catch that pee has been like a comedy show. When Grayson urinates, it’s like turning on a hose. Yesterday, we finally found a solution with using wash cloths. Hopefully this ends the 2 diaper’s per diaper change situation…
- Breastfeeding less than 15 minutes means I will be feeding Grayson every hour. This quickly becomes exhausting so finding ways to stretch the time between feedings to at least 2 hours saves a lot of grief. I have also found ways to trick Grayson into eating more when he is feeding, like touching his jaw or hand expressing between suckles.
- Sleep is hard to come-by so take every opportunity you can. Medical school and residency exhaustion have nothing on new motherhood exhaustion! When I get overwhelmed, I just remind myself that this time will fly by.
- The first 4 days of his life are the absolute hardest. I got a total of 6 hours sleep those first few days. We were still learning what his needs were and what each sound he made meant. It is still hard, but nothing like the beginning.
